SURVIVING FLORENCE

After living in a flood zone for over 12 years, my husband and I made the difficult decision to evacuate when faced with the impending arrival of Hurricane Florence.   We had ridden out Irene and Matthew, but the warning for Florence was different.  I could physically feel the fear and my family kept chanting: GO!  Go now!  Leave!  The county had issued a mandatory evacuation which only means that you are on your own if you need help.

As we prepared to leave, I moved the 15 scrapbooks I had made for my "grand"son for his graduation from college, the three scrapbooks I made of the graduation trips I had given to my two nieces and nephew; photos of my late son, brother and sister to the room over the garage.  I looked around at this room that seemed to be the Museum of my Life:  a wall of my "grand"son's achievements; photos of his high school and college graduation; the painting my niece did of Democrats for Hillary and Obama during the 2008 primary campaign; theatre posters; my award for community service and one for visionary leadership (haha).  It was so emotional  to think that I could lose all this and much, much more.  I didn't care about the furniture or clothes, but this was my life and when you reach a certain age, memories are so vital to who you are and the time you have left in this crazy world.

We locked up the house and left in the wee morning hour of 5:00am headed to safety, my sister's home in Virginia.  For almost a week, we had no idea what we would be returning to.  Then a very kind and good person contacted us to tell us we were one of the lucky homeowners.  For the most part, we had very little damage.  About two feet of flood waters had gotten into the garage, debris covered our yard, deck and porch and our neighborhood looked like a war zone, but we had a house to come home to.

Two things I would like to point out during this period.  I love my sister, but she and her husband are Trumpers so we tried to be good guests, never speaking of politics and never watching cable news (fake news to them).

So that left me with Facebook which is not the best place to get news, fake or otherwise. And this brings me to my second point. I live in a deep red southern state.  I was warned by friends,  "don't move there."  I left an area that was open minded, diverse and very liberal to a place that lives in the past, still fighting the Civil War (excuse me, they call it the War Between the States).  Give me a break.  But as a teen I had started a love affair with North Carolina, visiting UNC Chapel Hill and a family that I thought was perfect (it wasn't, but I was young and impressionable).  When retirement came, I thought, finally I can make the move to what had become a utopia in my mind.  Like so much in life, be careful what you wish for...  The irony in all this is I moved from a small town in Pennsylvania that was a Republican stronghold, right after my high school graduation back in the sixties.  How Republican was it?  Put a poodle as a candidate for dog catcher with an (R) beside it and it would win, hands down.

My point about getting news from Facebook is most of it is opinion and with my having too much time on my hands, I was overly sensitive about news of the hurricane; the not knowing was making me a wreck.  But the post that almost set my hair on fire was the one about judging those who evacuated and those who stayed.  Someone wrote a rambling dissertation about the ones  who evacuated were being seen as  "entitled."  Oh, dear lord, we are senior citizens that went to stay with family.  Even our dog is a senior dog who was filled with anxiety and I had to clean up after him several times and I began to feel like stinking dead fish after three days.  It had nothing to do with my sister, it is just the way I felt.  I have an aging husband  who is having a difficult  time with his short term memory and critical thinking; we were anxious and nervous; impatient to return to our own beds and life.  Now I am considered "entitled."  My husband is still working at a part-time job to subsidize our social security and a small pension.  STFU!

Those who stayed had no other choice even if it was a mandatory evacuation so don't judge them, but judge the ones who left.  I live in a retirement area where many were too old or too sick to leave.  I heard one story where a man died during the storm and his wife  sat with him for two days before she could be rescued.  Truthful, I don't know. It is quite possible that this story is true.  Several families in this area were rescued from their roof tops.  My only concern about those who stayed was for their safety and the safety of anyone who might have to rescue them should it become necessary.  There was so much more to be worried about; the destruction and devastation was overwhelming but they wanted to preach about judging who left and who didn't.  Why in Heaven's name was it  necessary to draw attention to a short-term problem that was more opinion than fact and only made a horrible situation worse.  Apparently, addressing something that was a molehill and that only causes division by pitting people against one another was worth it.  Guess, they must be taking their cues from the idiot in the White House.

I'll bring this full circle with my opinion about what I have seen and endured as a Yankee living in the south.  No matter how long you live in the south, if you were born above the Mason-Dixon line, you will never really be accepted.  And if you try to fit in, they will take advantage of your naivete; your enthusiasm and will "bless your heart" with every donation you make, but when push comes to shove, instead of supporting you or being a friend, they will throw you out like yesterday's newspaper.  The mentality in this little town is native born vs newcomers.  One of my "grand"son's friend's father called us Yankees.  He was reminded that my husband was born and bred in Virginia.  His reply:  "Anyone from north of North Carolina is a Yankee."  The truth is that the influx of retirees and tourists is what brings the majority of revenue.   The town relies on the retirees and tourists to spend money.  So maybe this is what pisses them off.  There are some natives who have nice chunks of change, but they are a small percentage.  The reality is that there are many living in poverty here.    They really don't want transplants, but they need us for tax revenue and to bring money into the town.  Of course, I am speaking in general terms.  There may be a few who don't feel this way...one or two?

When the media was here covering the flood, people were upset that they were televising the misery of the town.  Someone wrote on Facebook that people should not be taking photos of the flooding and the destruction...to please respect those who have lost so much...  Now there are Facebook posts commenting negatively on how the media is no where to be seen after the initial reporting of the hurricane.  So what exactly do they want.  I'm confused!

But I digress.  After 11 days of evacuation, we returned home.  Yes, we were lucky, but we did lose a car that we had in our garage. A car that has great sentimental value to me, was totaled from the flood water and pretty much everything that was on the floor of the garage had to be thrown out; a new lawnmower, etc.  Debris from the flood was all over the yard; the siding was covered with dirt, pine needles and leaves: we had a leak from the roof that came through the kitchen. We have had to deal with three different insurance policies.  Here in the lowlands, you have to have hazard, flood plus wind, rain and hail policies so we are dealing with a multitude of people.  Even though, we have very little to complain about, our lives have been thrown into a state of limbo, a little chaos and uncertainty.  I want to help those who so desperately need help, but I have no vehicle during the week and I am concerned about how much money we are going to need to replace what we lost and fix what is broken.  It is going to take a long time to get back to normal.

Now that everyone is in recovery mode, I get updates all day on the cleanup, donations, housing for the homeless, re-openings of businesses, donations that are needed, etc., etc.  Along with these updates, people will make positive and negative comments about anything and everything.  So many people have had to throw out so many things that they cared about.  Curbs are overflowing with furniture, lawnmowers, power washers, clothes, memorabilia, photos.  In some cases, almost the entire house is sitting on the curb to be taken to the dump.  This type of situation brings in the scavengers.  As the scavengers sift through the articles, the owners become furious that strangers are being so callous about their loss.  A young man saw a plastic  tub that we had put out as garbage, he asked my husband if he could have it.  Since it was holding flood ravaged books and other miscellaneous items, my husband had to say no.  If someone wants your "junk"(what you don't want), this is what people should do, ASK!  The other side of this issue is if you don't want it, shouldn't you be somewhat happy that someone else can use it.  A few people have chased the scavengers off with a rifle. By the way, the law says if it is at your curb, it is not stealing if someone takes your garbage/junk.   Just sayin...

Several people commented on their outrage over these scavengers, one person actually laid the blame on Damn Yankees ~ "it's those Damn Yankees!"  Yeah, well lots of Damn Yankees have been sending donations, lineman and volunteers to help. A truck loaded with donations from Erie, PA (Damn Yankee land) came just a few days ago.

Thank you to the Rotary Club for this gracious acknowledgement!

A few friends have thought that maybe since we came through this hurricane, it was a sign that we were meant to stay here, a town that was voted "most charming small town in North Carolina."  But as we all know, looks can be deceiving and the charm here is only skin deep.  I stopped wearing my rose colored glasses a long time ago.  If I could, I would move in a heartbeat, but I don't think too many people are going to be interested in buying a house in a flood ravaged area, not for awhile anyway. Living blue in a red area is not fun.

It felt good to vent.  Cathartic.  Maybe I'm just a little overly sensitive.

All I can do right now is take live a day at time; try to get back to normal; have a little fun and watch cable news and curse like a truck driver at the idiot in chief and his Rethug goons; hoping that a BLUE TSUNAMI comes in November.  I got through Hurricane Florence, so let the Blue Tsunami hit the voting booth!

VOTE BLUE!

MEMO TO JOURNALISTS AND MAIN STREAM MEDIA

 Update:  February 22, 2021

If you watched  Chuck Todd on MSNBC, you may have noticed that Steve Scalise who has zero credibility and has shown his true colors too many times was welcomed to voice his opinion.  WHY?  When Hillary Clinton lost in 2016, the media gurus kept telling her and her supporters to MOVE ON.  Why does the media keep giving the far right Trump wackos a platform?

I don't need to write a new blog post on this because it is the same ole, same ole garbage being regurgitated.  Below is a headline from the end of December 2020.

"Beltway media fears the loss of Trump gravy train..."

The answer, my friend is in the lyrics from Cabaret's Money:

"Money makes the world go around

The world go around

The world go around"

 Update:  December 30, 2020

BREAKING NEWS:  TRUMP LOST!   (sarcasm alert)

It is long past time to stop normalizing this man and his administration.  There is nothing normal about him.  Anyone who truly cares about our country will stop making him something he is not.  He is a fundamentally damaged human being.  Not being a psychiatrist, I will leave it at that.  For four years, the media has striven to downplay the words and actions of this DEPLORABLE man and his enablers.   We are in this crisis because of  the media giving him a platform that he in no way deserved.  Democracy is in jeopardy!  One of the first elements that will go if we lose our Democracy will be the free press.  Voice of America has already been taken over by Trump's favorite right wingers...

The Trump media hype brought in lots of money.  Can we now move on so we can regain our status in the world and stop being a hideous sensationalizing reality show?  The Trump gravy train needs to end!

The Twisted Trump Supporter's View On Immigration

The other day I read a Facebook  post that insisted that it was unfair and offensive to compare the Holocaust and Nazis with the separation of migrant children and their parents.  Below is a response to that post from a woman who also happens to be a middle school teacher.  The thought of her teaching makes me cringe. Like most Facebook posts, it verges on the edge of some facts, but most of it is opinion.  Below is the post that set my hair on fire.  I did a copy and paste for the sake of accuracy and not paraphrasing.

"Our situation is not born of racial hatred. It is born of safety concerns, economic stress, and fear that instead of being a great country that receives and nurtures refugees, we are becoming a struggling country that has become a dumping ground.
They come here of their own volition, knowing that detention centers and jail are possibilities. Some are legitimately escaping catastrophic circumstances. Others are seeking economic gain and are willing to come illegally to do it. The process to assess individuals is slow and agonizing, but our government's responsibility is to its people first.

The habit of sensationalizing and villainizing Trump beyond the often bombastic fuel he provides on a regular basis is just a tactic to make us so emotional we forget to reason through a situation. Illegal immigration and those seeking asylum have reached record numbers.  Instead of hurling insults and engaging in hyperbole, we need to encourage bipartisan efforts to find solutions."
  • Did people vote for Trump because of economic hardship concerns?
"Support for Donald J. Trump in the 2016 election was widely attributed to citizens who were “left behind” economically. These claims were based on the strong cross-sectional relationship between Trump support and lacking a college education. Using a representative panel from 2012 to 2016, I find that change in financial wellbeing had little impact on candidate preference. Instead, changing preferences were related to changes in the party’s positions on issues related to American global dominance and the rise of a majority–minority America: issues that threaten white Americans’ sense of dominant group status. Results highlight the importance of looking beyond theories emphasizing changes in issue salience to better understand the meaning of election outcomes when public preferences and candidates’ positions are changing."   Taken from the report -- Status threat, not economic hardship, explains the 2016 presidential vote.  Diana C. Mutz -- Department of Political Science, University of Pennsylvania and Annenberg School for Communication, Philadelphia, Pa., April 23, 2018.For the full report:   http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2018/04/18/1718155115

  • Are Trump's supporters racists?
From the same study mentioned above.  University of Pennsylvania political scientist Diana Mutz reports a key group of voters—those who switched parties to vote for Trump—were motivated by the vision of a frightening fall in social status. In short, they feared they were in the process of losing their previously privileged positions.

  • Concerned about safety?  From refugees, drug dealers, Isis, human trafficking?  What exactly does that mean and what does it have to do with children being separated from their parents?
"The deportation trend abated towards the latter part of the Obama administration, with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announcing efforts to “prioritize convicted criminals and threats to public safety, border security, and national security.” Although 2013 was a record-setting year with 435,498 deportations, 2015 saw the lowest numbers in a decade, according to ICE."  From Snopes.com

US Terrorist Attacks Fast Facts (since 9/11)
From CNN's website, March 1, 2018 --

*November 5, 2009 -- Fort Hood, Texas

July 16, 2015 -- Chattanooga, Tennessee

December 2, 2015 --  San Bernadino, CA

June 12, 2016 -- Orlando, FL

October 31, 2017 -- New York, NY

December 11, 2017 -- New York, NY

How many of these terrorist attacks were homegrown here in the US?

Trump painted a dark picture of immigrants, despite the facts.

"Ewing used another approach to look at national immigration trends. From 1990 to 2013, both legal and undocumented immigrants came pouring into the U.S. The percentage of the U.S. population that is foreign-born increased from 7.1% to 13.1%. Yet over that time, violent crime rates plummeted 48% across the country." In 2014, a team of university professors took a different approach." They examined crime habits of juveniles convicted of felonies in Arizona and Pennsylvania. Their study found that native-born juveniles were more likely to become repeat offenders than immigrant juveniles."

  • Fear that our country will become a dumping ground for refugees.  We don't have room.

America needs another wave of immigration. "This is in part just basic math: We need more young workers to fund the old age of the baby boomers. But there is more to it than that. Immigrants also provide a shot in the arm to American vitality itself. Always have, always will. Immigrants are now twice as likely to start a new business as native-born Americans. Rates of entrepreneurialism are declining among natives but rising among immigrants."  From:  In defense of immigrants: Here’s why America needs them now more than ever, May 17, 2016 by Richard V. Reeves The complete article/opinion can be found at www.Brookings.edu

  • "The process is slow and agonizing."

People were turned away at the official designated border crossing so slow and agonizing is really NO ENTRY/NO ACCESS now that Trump's (Sessions) new immigration policy is in effect.

From The Atlantic, June 18, 2018:
“The [narcos] threatened to kill every last person in our house—even the dog,” says Wayner Berduo, a young Guatemalan asylum seeker at the U.S.-Mexican border, in a new documentary from The Atlantic. Berduo says he lost his left eye and the use of his right arm in a violent attack late last year. Like thousands of Central American families, the Berduos say they’re seeking legal protection in the U.S. because of gang violence at home.

But now, the Trump administration is taking steps to prevent them from finding safety in the U.S. On June 11, Attorney General Jeff Sessions ruled that the U.S. would no longer accept gang violence or domestic abuse as valid reasons for asylum. Meanwhile, citing lack of space, U.S. agents have started to turn back asylum seekers at ports of entry in recent weeks, leaving throngs of hopefuls at bridges all along the border. Critics say “slow-walking” asylum applicants is just one more measure meant to discourage Central Americans from entering the country.

Repeatedly turned away by U.S. border guards, the Berduo family spent days sleeping on the ground next to the international bridge—trapped in a kind of purgatory that spans the Rio Grande."

  • They come here on their own volition knowing they could be put in jail or detention centers.

Apparently,  you believe as does Trump that the  immigrants that are coming are murderers, rapists, drug lords, etc., you do concede that some are coming here "legitimately"

That means they are seeking asylum per the Asylum protocols listed below:  Families are being separated following the Asylum protocols as set forth 8 U.S. Code § 1158 - Asylum "Any alien who is physically present in the United States or who arrives in the United States (whether or not at a designated port of arrival and including an alien who is brought to the United States after having been interdicted in international or United States waters), irrespective of such alien’s status, may apply for asylum in accordance with this section or, where applicable, section 1225(b) of this title."

Perhaps, you and others should be finding out more about the Central American countries (Guatemala, Honduras, etc) they are fleeing from and the conditions there that would make them journey 2,000 miles to come to our borders.

While you pivoted and diverted like a true Trumper, you did not address the question of a false equivalency between the separation of children from their undocumented, border crossing parents.  Perhaps, you should pick up some history books on Hitler such as "The Rise and Fall of Adolf Hitler" by William L. Shirer.  Fascism and Nazis did not happen over night.  It was a methodical step by step process so while we are not committing genocide, fascism is definitely on the rise.  Internment camps for immigrants and we still have not reunited the children with their parents?  Your president actually said there were good Nazis who participated in the Charlottesville, VA protest where a young woman was mowed down by a self-proclaimed white nationalist Nazi.

If you have been paying attention, you can see that your president is enamored of dictators.  Turn off Fox News and get some perspective.

  • "The habit of sensationalizing and  villainizing Trump. Instead of hurling insults and  engaging in hyperbole, we need to encourage bipartisan efforts to find solutions."

Dear lady, no one has to do any sensationalizing, etc. of Trump, he does such a disgusting and deplorable job of that all on his own.  We have a Liar in Chief.   Have you seen your leaders' tweets?  Not only is he the Liar in Chief, he is the Commander in Chief of Tweeting insults.  Please turn off Fox News so we can have a coherent discussion.

But the biggest fault in your comment is the sin of omission.  Not once do you show any compassion or empathy toward the children.  You are a teacher, for God's sake, how can you not understand the emotional abuse and the psychological damage that is happening to these children.  Without the parents to oversee their own children, the situation is ripe for pedophiles and physical abuse.  Where is your humanity?

So I will end with this #HillaryWasRight...

The Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Syndrome of Community Theatre

THE GOOD, BAD AND UGLY OF COMMUNITY THEATRE
This is my experience.  Obviously, others may not have encountered the same types of people or situations that I did.  After retiring to a small coastal area, I decided it was time to find a hobby.  I had been active in community service for several years, but I also had a passion for theatre so...  This is my story.

I saw an audition notice in the local newspaper and feeling nervous and apprehensive, I gathered my courage and read for a part.  I would have been thrilled with any part, but surprise, I landed one of the leads.  It was a role for a much younger woman, but since few people showed up to audition...  This theatre group was the B theatre that had been created when several disgruntled people from the A theatre group went rogue and started a new group.  Warning, Will Robinson!  This should have been my first clue I was entering into a group that was already charged with emotion and not the good kind.

Community Theatre "Actors" On and Off  Stage
  •  The Aging Ingenue -- Make no mistake, she will knock you over in a heartbeat if you are in her path. The part she is playing may have her disheveled and/or not looking her best, but she will put lipstick on a pig in order to shine.  She is still running for prom queen.
  • The Talented Crazy -- She will steal the scenes she is in, but not before she has cried and vented; exclaiming that she is not good enough; walk out when she doesn't get her way; forget her cue to come on the stage so improvisation/ad libbing is necessary till she finally shows up.
  • The Know It All --  They have seen it all and done it all so you need to listen to them.  They were practically "professionals"
  • The Gay Best Friend -- First, anyone who wants to find friends, this is not the place.  The percentage for making a good and lasting friendship is about 10 percent.   I love this quote regarding friendship in community theatre:  "...the other 92 percent are arrogant two-faced backbiters who would sell their own mother's funeral plot --- with her buried in it ---for a decent role or a pack of Marlboro Lights..."*
  • The Mediocre Director -- With the term mediocre, what more needs to be said...this could also be the pseudo intellectual or a mix.
  • The Novice Director  -- Beware!  The novice director is a person who has an inflated opinion of their capabilities.  Any actor who is conscientious and cares about their work will be driven up a wall by this director.  You will be at their mercy with their complete lack of skill and understanding of theatre and their ego driven agenda.
  • The Founder -- See Letter to a Founding Board Member, May 22, 2017 post.
  • The Pay to Play Patron -- Not often associated with Theatre B, but Theatre A relies heavily on donations.  Theatre B doesn't have the skills or brains to realize the importance of donations.  They can barely thank a donor, let alone acknowledge and appreciate them.
  • The "Christians" --  Only in the Bible Belt of the south.  Prayers are lifted at the beginning of each performance.  In private, they mock gays, "scarlet letter" women and gossip mercilessly, constantly stirring up the pot.  More than likely they are all Trump voters.  These people are the ones who throw the "love you" phrase around ad nauseam.  Christians?  I think not.
  • The Theatre Kids -- This is where the idea of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personalities really come to life.  There are so many positives to theatre for children and teens, but there are also huge pitfalls.  The TK's are some of the meanest and  nastiest and the majority of them are girls.  Some are "apples that did not fall far from the mother tree."
          Examples of TK brats:
  1. There was an instance where a couple of girls had a fake facebook page for a non-existent boy.  They sent messages to one of their female "friends"  feigning interest.  Ouch.  Hate to be one of their enemies.  This was done while they were involved in a Theatre A production.
  2. One of the mean girls (remember this is a teen) circulated information in the hope of deposing the executive director/manager of Theatre A.  The position of executive director at theatre A is a job, not a hobby.  Note: Theatre B has no paid administrative positions.  The only paid positions are in the artistic areas such as directors, music directors and choreographers.  All other positions are volunteers including the board of directors.
  3. The adults surrounding these kids constantly fawn over them; congratulate; compliment and fill their heads with delusions of stage life grandeur.  Some have hopped on planes to NYC and LA in the hopes of making it big.  Most return to their small hamlets and community theatre.  Adults in theatre hanging out socially with teens is not a good look, but it happens.
  • The Pseudo Intellectual -- "loves" Shakespeare; has an English degree, possibly a theatre degree, but their lack of real talent makes them jealous of anyone with even a modicum of talent.
  • The Mama Rose Mother -- The most striking feature of this person is her strident military walk down the aisle to chastise and complain about the treatment of their child.  She is the tree that bears the next generation of mean girls.
  • The Insecure Enthusiast can also be called the Inexperienced But Full of Themselves -- This is a combo of personalities.  This person likes to go to the theatre and is infatuated with the idea of becoming involved with community theatre.  This person may have a child that wants to be involved in theatre; has talents in areas that can be used, but has little to no talent regarding staging and production.  Community theatre will eat this person up while at the same time, the Enthusiast is given too much authority; lets it go to her head and starts believing in her "press releases."  This person is the type that becomes a board member... not interested in being on the stage, but her child is (has a smidgen of Mama Rose in her personality).
Not long after my first production with Theatre B, I received a phone call inviting me to join the board of directors.  I was offered the positions of secretary or vice president.   It was my choice.  Hearing that as the VP, I would also be the chair of the production board and my only duties  would be reading plays and submitting suggestions for the theatre season, I was hooked.  Remember I was new to the area and this sounded like a great way to get involved in the community.  What could go wrong?

What I wasn't told was that everything falls on the VP.  Theatre B existed only out of revenge toward Theatre A and that the board consisted of people who really didn't care if they were successful just as long as they were a thorn in the side of Theatre A and that the board members got to "play" at running a theatre.  There was no long range plan.  The most powerful founder on the board was vain and ego driven, possessing all the power no matter who was president.  Everyone deferred to this person who had long ago lost any drive for success and growth.   The word schadenfreude comes to mind.  Board meetings were a battle of pettiness and cattiness.  After serving as a vice president, member-a-large and finally as president, I lasted six years before I said, enough is enough.  That was just over three years ago.  From theatre gossip, I have heard that the board now regularly causes the vice-president to cry at board meetings.

It should be noted that while my references are mainly regarding Theatre B, Theatre A has had a less than stellar reputation.  When Theatre B opted to have a teen musical for teens by teens.  Theatre A went into attack mode spreading gossip about the teen directors pushing the cast to have sex with the male teen director so they would understand their parts better.  Sounds ridiculous, but it made the gossip circuit.  I received emails from a school teacher advising of the rumor.  Along with THE rumor, the cast and crew of the teen musical received harsh criticism from a volunteer at Theatre A about their behaviour at a county-wide school production.  The gossip was outrageous and hurtful.  Theatre B has not had a teen directed vehicle since.  The irony is  that Theatre A decided the following year to do a teen show every summer.

Gossip is a mainstay in a small town and community theatre is a toxic dump of gossip.  After I left my last board meeting, never to return, some of the board members decided to answer the question of why I left with, "she had a nervous breakdown."  This was promoted by the so-called "Christian" board members.

With the wrong people at the helm, community theatre is Mr. Hyde.  Even when Dr. Jekyll seems to be running the organization, be prepared, Mr. Hyde is just around the corner.  That being said, when community theatre is good, it can be the best part of a community.  I have seen handicapped children; those with Aspergers and autism flourish in theatre.  Their confidence blossoming and exploding on the stage.  Wonderful productions that educate and explore the human condition are seen by people who may never get to a Broadway production.  Theatre is the best 3-D experience!  Studies have found that theatre for senior citizens helps keep memory and cognitive abilities sharp.  Being open minded and diverse should always be part of a community theatre's mission statement.

When I joined the board of Theatre B, it was struggling.  Their reputation was that they were the "B" theatre of the community; their shows were low brow and/or southern fried comedies.  This group was absolutely no competition for Theatre A.   It didn't start out as my plan to change the landscape of theatre in this burg, but seeing all the mistakes and "no action" plan, I decided that maybe Theatre B could be a contender.  And thus, my battle began.  Not only did I have to contend with the negative gossip from Theatre A, but the other board members of Theatre B, while showing some support were also  fighting modernization and progress.  I soon realized that they were not interested in success.  They just wanted a workhorse that they could bully into doing what the "leader of the pack" (oldest living founder) wanted.  This so-called "leader" was an envious, tired old woman who should have retired as a board member years ago, but is still serving as she heads toward 90.

The struggle I encountered was classic; considered a foreigner (if you moved from a state that was to the north even if it was considered southern, you are a northerner), I was never going to be accepted.  And as inclusive as theatre is suppose to be, theatre cliques are the norm and they rule in a small town. One actor said she had been here over 25 years and still was not accepted.  I got plenty of "bless your heart" and "love you," but in the end when I decided, I had to leave this toxic environment, not ONE person called to see how I was...  I mean, after all, I had just had a nervous breakdown.  And they go to church every Sunday and pray...golly, I hope they were praying for me... If I was going to have a nervous breakdown, it would have been when my son died, not because of a group of  back stabbing hypocrites.

Both theatres are housed in historical buildings.   Theatre A owns their building and has been an awesome guardian/caretaker of their building's rich history.  Theatre B leases their performing arts home and instead of contributing some of their profits (they are a non-profit 501(c) 3), they have chosen to hoard their money.  Theatre B's home is becoming more and more decrepit.  It would behoove those in power to pour some much needed money and love into keeping the restored building in better shape.  Quite frankly, they should be embarrassed by their lack of concern and care.  With a rumored $200,000 sitting in the bank, I think they could manage to budget some money for maintenance and/or submit applications for grants.  Setting priorities has never been a strong suit of Theatre B.  Their lack of foresight is almost legendary.  The community is well aware of their shortcomings.  Getting people to serve on the board requires pleading and more than a little mendacity.   One of the pitfalls to being on their board is working with split personalities.  Remember, most are actors and that brings us back to my analogy of  Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

I came across a 2014 post on the internet, "Top 10 ways to Ensure Your Best People Will Quit"*  which reminded me of my time with community theatre.  Here are some of my favorites from the list (paraphrased):
  1. Treat everyone equally.  Sounds good, but really some people are worth more, because they produce more results.  The key is not to treat them equally; it is to treat them fairly.
  2. Tolerate mediocrity.
  3. Have dumb rules.  Rules are fine, but not dumb ones.
  4. Don't recognize outstanding performance and contributions.
  5. Don't keep your people informed.  Communicate before the rumor mill does.
Regrets?  I have a few, but what I gained from being part of community theatre more than outweighs the negatives.  I found that I was much more capable than I would have ever imagined.  I lived and breathed Theatre B and brought it up to at least a B+ and gave it a new life...from mediocre to much better.   Recently, I found myself back at this theatre as an actor in back to back productions.  My gay best friend that I love and adore and is an amazingly talented director got me to face my ghosts and demons and I had the best theatre experience of my life.  I brought two totally different characters to life and it was a thrill.  Amusing how some of the board members had a difficult time looking me in the eye.

"Good night Mrs. Calabash wherever you are."

KINDNESS AND CIVILITY IN THE AGE OF TRUMP

KINDNESS & GOODNESS
RANDOM AND INTENTIONAL

It isn't always easy to choose to be kind especially these days when the leader of our country can only be described as a bully.  He certainly does not lead by example when it comes to goodness.  He pulled in the evangelicals by simply saying he was Christian even though his actions were so far from being Christian, that he has made a mockery of the Christian right.  Civility seems to be a lost art.  It is still hard for me to believe that evangelical Christians chose Trump over Hillary Clinton.  I find it very sad, perplexing and extremely hypocritical, but since I have covered that territory in other posts on this blog, I will move on with my thoughts on kindness.

Hillary Clinton quoted this from John Wesley many times during her 2016 campaign:

"Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can."

I have to wonder if Jesus Christ were to come today, what would he have to say about Donald Trump and his Christian supporters?

But even before Trump came into the picture I noticed the hypocrisy of Christianity in many people.  There will always be devils in the midst of angels...

After I moved to a Bible Belt area several years ago, I became dumbfounded by the ugliest most base people.  In some ways, it was like the clock had stopped in the 1950's.  I guess my first mistake was getting involved in a very toxic group  --  community theatre.  I always thought theatre was such an inclusive and open minded place.  Well, bless your heart and pass the black eyed peas, nope not in this town.

Social media has become one of the worst ways to show the ugly side of humans.  Recently I saw a post that tried really hard to degrade another person who was hurting and smarting, but she opted to go for the jugular in order to make herself feel better.  This came from a teacher who is well known for dishing it out but breaking down when she has to take it.  Take a cue and RISE!

It is a mystery to me why people choose to become friends on Facebook, but never interact, comment, like, love or share a commonality with i.e humor, political, hobbies, travels, etc.  Are they really interested in the person or just stalking or peeking into their life  as a voyeur; or wanting to look popular by having a large number of "friends?"  Understandable to some degree, I guess,  if you are still in high school or networking, but really, really too silly and high school for adults to play that game.

On the positive side of Facebook, I have met some very loving and supportive Facebook friends through mutual Facebook friends.  We have never met in person, but share much in common and I thoroughly enjoy our interactions and feel much gratitude for their friendship and kindness.

We hear so much about random acts of kindness which is lovely and should be praised.  But maybe we should try to be intentionally kind, not just act on impulse to a person in line at a coffee shop by paying for a strangers' latte.  By that I mean looking around at people, that  you see every day and showing kindness in small and subtle ways like complimenting them; supporting them with words of encouragement and support; understanding or attempting to understand their situation; praise them for a job well done; smile; being agreeable; showing interest in them; invite them to your church or club when they are new to the area.  No monetary expenditure and no harm to you...

  • Kindness can be the simplest thing, like saying hello when a person comes into the room for a meeting.
  • Complimenting them on a job well done; new hair style, new outfit.
  • Offering help when it is so apparent that they are drowning in anxiety and stress.
  • Not adding to their stress with petty nonsense.
  • My Grandmother use to say:  "Pretty is as pretty does," and, of course, from the Bible, "Do unto others as you would do have them do unto you."
Recently, a photo of Joe Biden  with a homeless man outside of a movie theatre, went viral with the caption:  "Character is about what you do when no one is watching."  Absolutely agree, but we should also think about character and kindness for those we know, respect and love just because it is the decent thing to do.

Mr. Biden showed random kindness to a homeless man, but was much less generous in his reaction to Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential loss.  From CNN on March 27, 2017: "Former Vice President Joe Biden believes he could have been elected president had he decided to run last year."  I doubt this seriously, but that isn't the point.  He knew how wounded Hillary Clinton was from the brutal campaign and loss, but he chose to sooth his ego with a hypothetical statement that only added salt to the wound of not only HRC, but her supporters.  It served no purpose and it speaks volumes about his character.  Happy that you were kind to this homeless man, but...

There was interesting article by Rabbi Marc Gellman in the March 11, 2018 Raleigh News Observer:  "Striving to be good is the right thing to do."  He had been sent a question from  a theology student at Mercy High School in Middletown, CN:

"Does God punish wrongdoings like people say?"

Part of Rabbi Gelman's answer:

"IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER.  ...In the Proverbs: 11:17 we read, Kindness is its own reward, but cruelty is a self-inflicted wound.'   He goes on to say that ...doing the wrong thing, the evil thing, the cruel thing, diminishes our lives right here and right now, and doing the good thing enriches our lives right here and now."

I  wonder what God is thinking about Mr. Trump.  Is he/she  thinking  that Trump is a very diminished man who chooses evil and cruelty over goodness and kindness?

As a very imperfect person, I have to try on a daily basis to be kind...question my motives.. and try to forgive.  Not being an angel, I can say that forgiveness does not come easily to me and I have a big character flaw, I can carry a grudge through eternity.  So I write this knowing my faults, understanding them and hoping we all try just a little harder to be kinder and gentler and remember it really is okay to leave the toxic people behind.

SAVE OUR COUNTRY: VOTE BLUE!

Update:  July 5, 2020

Originally written on March 10, 2018.  Much has changed, but the administration has stayed the course in outrageous and deplorable behaviour.  Trump has become even more incoherent and his lies are now measured in the thousands.

He brought in William Barr as Attorney General who has proven to be just another lawyer for Trump; covering up his abuses; lying for him and destroying the rule of law and helping to turn our country into a dictatorship run by the right.

We now have even more unqualified people in places of power in the administration who are willing to along with Trump's agenda at all costs.

We are in the middle of pandemic (Covid-19)  that Trump and his cohorts have turned into a nightmare of outrageous stupidity.

This administration has become a symbol for white nationalism which has trickled down to the most uneducated in our country.  Many white women and men looking more and more deranged are  screaming obscenities at any person of color they come into contact with...  Protestors of all colors and nationalities are taking to the streets for Justice...No Justice, No Peace.  Change is coming!

The latest bombshell comes from our intelligence committees regarding bounties Russia paid to the Taliban for killing American troops.  Again Trump believes  the Russians, not our intelligence service.  What does Russia have on Trump that he is so willing to sell our country out to an adversary that is drinking champagne and laughing at the chaos in our country.  This is Treason!

NOVEMBER 3, 2020 CANNOT COME SOON ENOUGH!  VOTE FOR JOE BIDEN
(what do you have to lose?)
We need to reclaim our country and regain our standing in the world.

****

Hillary Clinton was right.  The base of Trump's supporters are deplorable as well as most of his administration.  Oh, and don't forget his family.  They are the picture of  deplorable American white elitism.  The Republican hypocrisy of the 2016 campaign is mind blowing.  Remember this:
  • Hillary Clinton was criticized  for being an elitist; taking money for speeches from Goldman Sachs, etc and others; taking donations from corporations and  foreign countries for the Clinton Foundation suggesting there was quid pro quo.   After a year into the dumpster fire of a Trump administration, the hypocrisy is overwhelming.  Never in the history of the United States have we had such a Corrupt administration.  If the Trump supporters can take their head out of the sand and elsewhere they would realize they have been conned.  But many of them will never admit they were wrong because so many are probably no better than the man at the top of this deplorable heap.  Remember "lock her up."  It is more than time to change that chant to LOCK HIM UP or maybe LOCK UP THE FAMILY or maybe LOCK UP THE ADMINISTRATION! Take your pick, almost all of them have no ethics, no morals, no scruples and are leaning toward being traitors of our country.
From Rantt Media:

Trump's presidency is a swamp of hypocrisy

Trump campaign—'Clinton mishandled classified info!'

Trump admin—Accesses classified info without full security clearances

Candidate Trump—'Clinton is corrupt!'

President Trump—"Most corrupt admin in history"
  • Trump was going to "drain the swamp."  Instead he created swamp monsters intent on breaking and killing our democracy, institutions and safety nets.  Creating havoc while changing the tapestry and foundation of what our forefathers fought for in 1776.  Nepotism and favoritism may have been part of administrations in the past, but Trump has made it part and parcel of the nomination process.  No one needs to be experienced or accomplished to  head up a department.  Just be a large donor to Trump or the Republican party; kiss his ass and you too can be the head of  the Department of Education, Treasury, EPA, etc. or be related to him i.e. Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump.  Can you even imagine the outrage if Hillary Clinton had her daughter Chelsea  and son-in-law sitting in the White House without a security clearance?
Names that will go down in history for their mindless  and reckless disregard for the good of our country and its citizens:

SWAMP MONSTERS

#1 DONALD TRUMP-- Completely unfit to hold the office of president, liar, swindler, morally and ethically corrupt and the biggest hypocrite of all the swamp monsters.

Betsy DeVos  -- Department of Education Secretary with no resume to support appointment, intent on destroying public education; admitted during her confirmation hearing that her family had given $200 million in donations to Republicans.  Conclusion:  she bought her position

Ryan Zinke -- Secretary of the Department of Interior;  Zinke's expenditures as Secretary of the Interior, which include expensive flights, have raised ethical questions and controversy, and are investigated by the interior department’s office of inspector general.  Spent $13,00 on doors.  Where is the outrage from fiscal conservatives.  He is leading the charge to reduce reduce the size of perhaps 27 national monuments:
"In December 2017, Trump signed executive proclamations that reduced Bears Ears National Monument by 85% and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument by almost 46%. These moves prompted several legal challenges. One day later, Zinke issued a report recommending that Trump also shrink two more national monuments—Gold Butte National Monument in Nevada and Cascade–Siskiyou National Monument in Oregon. Zinke also recommended changes to the management of six other national monuments.[71] These changes were welcomed by Republicans such as Congressman Rob Bishop, the chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, but condemned by Democrats and environmentalist groups such as the Natural Resources Defense Council and Sierra Club."
Source:  Wikipedia

Scott Pruitt -- Administrator of the Environmental Proctection Agency; the list of the protections that he has rescinded is too many to list.  He sees that as regulations when they are in fact protections.  Businesses can pollute our water and air as long as they are making money, he cares not what the consumer/people will have to bear...  It is all about greed.  Flies first class on the public's dime.  Has sued the EPA multiple times and appears to be intent on destroying the agency.

Steve Mnuchin -- Investor; 17 years at Goldman Sachs (remember what Trump said about HRC's speeches to Goldman Sachs); used  government aircraft for personal usage; it was discovered that Mnuchin is registered to vote in both California and New York.
From his confirmation hearing:

"During his Senate confirmation hearing on January 19, 2017, Mnuchin was criticized by Democrats for OneWest's foreclose practises. Mnuchin said "Since I was first nominated to serve as Treasury secretary, I have been maligned as taking advantage of others' hardships in order to earn a buck. Nothing could be further from the truth". During the hearing, it was also noted that Mnuchin had failed to disclose $95 million of real estate that he owned and his role as director of Dune Capital International, an investment fund in a tax haven. Mnuchin described the omissions as mistakes made amid a mountain of bureaucracy."  Source:  Wikipedia

Ben Carson* -- Secretary of HUD with no resume to support his role; see possible changes to HUD mission statement below.  Ordered table and chairs for his office at a $31,000 cost to tax payers.  Cancelled the order after complaints were lodged.

John Kelly -- racist, liar Chief of Staff; examples of lying and subterfuge include Rob Porter, wife beater and statements regarding Rep. Frederica Wilson.

Kirstjen Nielsen--liar; supporter of merit-based immigration.
From her confirmation hearing:
"On Tuesday, January 16, 2018 Secretary Nielsen testified before the United States Senate and enunciated a position in favor of merit-based immigration, as opposed to the current immigration system based on family relations. She was questioned about a previous meeting at the White House on the topic of immigration in which press reports and Senator Dick Durbin stated that the President had used the word shithole to describe African countries and other disparaging remarks about Haiti. Nielsen said "I did not hear that word used, no sir" although she said she heard "tough language" which was impassioned. During the same hearing, Senator Patrick Leahy asked Secretary Nielsen whether Norway was a predominantly white country. Kirstjen Nielsen appeared to hesitate before answering, “I actually do not know that, sir." She added, "But I imagine that is the case.”  Following the hearing, Nielsen expressed her disappointment in the amount of attention being paid to the White House meeting."  Source:  Wikipedia

Rex Tillerson -- Department of State Secretary with no resume to support his role; multiple dealings with Russia; has not initiated research or programs to combat Russian interference into our elections; was granted $120 million to fight Russian meddling, but spent $0.

Steve Bannon -- Racist, misogynist, sexist who was once a counselor to the president

Jared Kushner -- ?  not sure what he is other than grifter, son-in-law of Trump; no qualfiications or diplomatic experience to support working in the White House; multiple conflicts of interest and ethics violations...

Ivanka Trump -- ?  grifter and daughter of Trump; no qualifications or resume to support working in the White House; multiple conflicts of interest and ethics violations...

Wilbur Ross  -- Department of Commerce Secretary; pushed for tariffs on steel and aluminum; "King" of Bankruptcy; failed to disclose Russian interests

Jeff Sessions -- Attorney General  who can only be described as a lifelong racist
And I have not forgotten Paul Manafort and Michael Flynn...

This is just a short list of the creatures in the black lagoon.

With all the noise and thunder about the Mueller investigation; the president and the porn star, there are many changes that don't get as much coverage.  For instance, this administration is intent on rolling back to a time of less inclusiveness or in the case of the USCIS, changing our identity.  Note the new mission statement from USCIS.  We are no longer a nation of immigrants.

New mission statement from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services:
"U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services administers the nation’s lawful immigration system, safeguarding its integrity and promise by efficiently and fairly adjudicating requests for immigration benefits while protecting Americans, securing the homeland, and honoring our values."

Previous mission statement:
"USCIS secures America’s promise as a nation of immigrants by providing accurate and useful information to our customers, granting immigration and citizenship benefits, promoting an awareness and understanding of citizenship, and ensuring the integrity of our immigration system."

*Here is the current mission statement, still on the HUD website:
HUD’s mission is to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all. HUD is working to strengthen the housing market to bolster the economy and protect consumers; meet the need for quality affordable rental homes; utilize housing as a platform for improving quality of life; build inclusive and sustainable communities free from discrimination, and transform the way HUD does business.
Here is the proposed mission statement in the memo:
HUD’s mission is to ensure Americans have access to fair, affordable housing and opportunities to achieve self-sufficiency, thereby strengthening our communities and nation.
The considerably shorter statement drops the terms sustainable, quality, quality of life, inclusive, and discrimination. It also abandons the phrasing related to strengthening the housing market and protecting consumers, and it instead emphasizes “self-sufficiency.”  *Source: Slate.com

My frustration is that his supporters have absolutely no idea how destructive his policies; executive decisions; lies and attitudes of racism, misogyny, sexism, anti-immigrant, pro-guns (NRA); his lack of compassion and empathy; his incoherent outrageous tweets; his seemly anti-intellectual rants; his lack of vision; greed and power regardless of the environment; the list goes on and on, are having on our country.  We have lost our status in the world and they just turn a blind eye to it or at the very least are putting their head in the sand.  What in the name of heaven is wrong with Christian evangelicals?  No matter what this demonic president does, they keeping supporting him and excuse everything he does.  Clearly anyone that is a true Christian would be outraged at his behaviour.

WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE, THE CONDEMNATION?

Mixing religion and politics is death to our democracy/republic.  It is possible to be a good American and a Christian, Jew, Atheist, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Agnostic, etc.  It will, however, mean that you accept the constitution as a patriotic American.  It will allow you to worship as you choose, but not to use your religion as a weapon against our country and it's citizens.

I am not sure that I will see recovery in my lifetime, but I rest my hopes for this country on students like the ones from Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School who are already finding and using their  voices for change to gun control and fighting the NRA as well as the women who have come out in droves to run for office.

WOULD JESUS BE ALLOWED TO IMMIGRATE TO THE UNITED STATES?

Several people serving in the current administration of the 45th president have been explaining their stance on legal immigration to the United States.  While there is much to be said about DACA and family reunification, etc. I have been trying to wrap my head around what has been espoused thus far regarding the changes this administration wants to implement regarding legal immigration.  What I am hearing is that the new policy would include more vetting of potential immigrants; bringing in people that are educated and skilled in professions that our country needs.

This made me think about my own ancestors.  It is highly doubtful that they would have passed muster in order for them to immigrate.  My sixth Great Grandfather on my maternal Grandmother's side of the family left Ireland (the family were Scots who had emigrated to Ulster, Ireland;  (his father was born on the Isle of Lewis, Hebrides Island, Scotland) on the ship, "Sally of Coleraine" in 1740.  Research shows that he was a farmer.  The question is, are we looking for farmers to immigrate to the United States in 2018?  Considering the financial difficulties that farmers face; government subsidies and major corporations buying out small farms, it doesn't seem reasonable that our government would be inclined to bringing in farmers.

Would your ancestors have been allowed to immigrate under the guidelines proposed by this inhumane, racist, anti-immigrant, anti-refugee administration?

Consider Jesus Christ, a brown-skinned Middle Easterner with Jewish parents whose earthly occupation was carpenter.  Would he be allowed to immigrate under the guidelines proposed?  Perhaps, we should also wonder what Jesus would think of the evangelicals who STILL support this disgusting president and his outrageous agenda.

Our country's very foundation was laid by immigrants.  Our history has shown that many of these people were treated horribly; prejudice was rampant; ghettos were spread throughout the larger cities where people were segregated by their ancestry.  Granted many of the immigrants sought to live with others who came in from the same country to help break the language barrier; ease into their new life in a new country and it felt a little like the homes they had left.  But the "ruling" class wanted to keep them there in order to control them and use them.  It has only been in the last few decades that I have accepted the reality of a less than stellar past in the United States.  Regardless of our imperfections; the continuing fight for equality (racism, sexism, misogyny); an ever growing disparity in income; this is still the country of dreams for immigrants.  We are flawed, but still a  beautiful country.

Immigrants are being vetted and terrorists are being thwarted from entering our country.  Losing our compassion and devolving into a country without basic human decency; turning our backs on the Dreamers and our history as a nation of immigrants raises the question:  how much lower can we go?"  It appears that the pit is bottomless with the Trump administration and the Republican majority.  They have fallen victim to two of the biggest threats to our country:  Power and Greed!

"A man's reach should exceed his grasp. Or what's a heaven for?"

My ancestors boarded that ship with a dream, hoping for a better life.  Their daughter Anna died on the trip across  and was buried at sea, but they persevered  becoming the earliest settlers in my hometown; fighting in the Revolutionary War serving under General Washington when they crossed the Delaware River fighting battles in Trenton and Princeton, NJ.

Remembering the lines at the bottom of the Statue of Liberty:

"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"  The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc.
